My Approach

At John Bennett Book Design, I work with clients to find the best way to communicate their message with words, type and images — working in both the print and electronic media.

 

I enjoy building long-term relationships with clients by providing quality — creative yet classic — graphic design solutions with timely and considerate personal service. A remarkably diverse client base of writers, editors, business professionals, educational institutions, collectors, artists, and not-for-profits has resulted. One of my great pleasures is my nationwide work with personal historians, individuals, and families requiring professional help with their publishing projects.

 

In addition, I put the antique 1847 Albion handpress in my studio and a mid-century Heidelberg Windmill letterpress to use to create one-of-a-kind and short-run letterpress books, and presentation documents for clients wishing unique printworks for their special projects.

Recognition

Several awards on the national level have been received from the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and from the Chicago Book Clinic. John's limited edition letterpress books can be found in both private collections and in the special collections of libraries in the
United States and abroad.

 

Background

After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, John became director of the University’s
Silver Buckle Press, a working museum of letterpress printing history, and a lecturer in UW's department of art. Later, John became an assistant professor of art at Oregon State University teaching graphic design, typography, and letterpress printing until deciding to put his full attention into book design, publication design, and fine printing.
